Candidasa: dove antichi regni incontrano la brezza della costa orientale.

Once a sleepy fishing settlement and, in the 1960s, the site of Bali’s very first purpose-built resort, Candidasa occupies a quieter stretch of coastline in the regency of Karangasem. Where southern Bali churns with beach clubs and traffic, this east-coast town unspools at a gentler pace—warungs line the main road, outriggers rest on volcanic sand, and the horizon belongs to the silhouette of Gunung Agung rather than high-rise hotels. It is, by design, a base rather than a spectacle: a place from which to dive, to explore ancient temples, or simply to watch the day turn gold.

## Why Candidasa Is Worth Visiting

East Bali rewards travelers willing to trade convenience for atmosphere, and Candidasa is the region’s most accessible anchor. The waters here drop quickly into some of the clearest snorkeling and diving territory in the archipelago, with the USS Liberty wreck at Tulamben just 40 minutes up the coast. Inland, the rice terraces of Sidemen and the mother temple of Besakih unfold within day-trip range, while the water palace at Tirta Gangga lies even closer. For visitors who want culture, reef, and quiet without surrendering comfort, Candidasa hits a rare balance.

## Getting There from South Bali

From Kuta, Seminyak, or Ubud, allow two to three hours by car. The route follows the coastal bypass through Sanur and onto the newly improved Tohpati–Amlapura road, which climbs briefly into the hills above Padangbai before descending into Candidasa. Private drivers are the standard choice and can be arranged through most hotels for around IDR 600,000 to 800,000 one way. Public transport is workable but slow; bemo connections to Amlapura require a transfer, and ride-hailing apps rarely service the area.

## Best Time to Visit

The dry season, running roughly from May through September, offers the calmest seas and best underwater visibility. October and November see shoulder-season rates and still-favorable conditions, while December through March brings heavier rain and rougher surf that can shut down dive sites. If timing aligns, the annual Bali Kite Festival between July and October sees traditional *layang-layang* flown from nearby fields—an atmospheric local spectacle.

## Things to Do and See

Underwater exploration defines any Candidasa itinerary. Day boats run to Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimpang, and the Blue Lagoon at Padangbai, where current-carved walls host reef sharks, turtles, and dense schools of jacks. Back on land, **Tenganan Pegeringsingan**—one of Bali’s original *Bali Aga* villages—preserves a pre-Hindu way of life within walking distance of most guesthouses, its *gringsing* double-ikat textiles still woven by hand. **Goa Lawah**, the bat-filled cliff temple 20 minutes west, is worth pairing with a visit to the white-sand crescent of **Pasir Putih** (Virgin Beach) for sunset. Half-day trips east to **Tirta Gangga** and **Ujung Water Palace** reveal the elaborate royal gardens of the Karangasem dynasty.

## Local Tips and Gotchas

Not all sand is sand: beach erosion has reduced much of Candidasa’s original shoreline to rocky tide pools, and the visible sand belongs largely to private hotels. Visitors seeking a proper swim should head to Pasir Putih or drive 15 minutes to the small cove at Bias Tugel. The main road has no proper footpaths—daytime walks to neighboring villages are pleasant, but walking after dark is ill-advised. Cash remains king outside the larger resorts, and ATMs occasionally run dry; carry enough rupiah from Amlapura or Ubud.

## Plan Your Visit

Base yourself for three to four nights to combine a couple of dive or snorkel days with one inland temple tour. Fly into Ngurah Rai (DPS) and pre-book a private transfer or driver; allow a full morning for the journey. The dry months of May to September deliver the best combination of visibility and weather, with April and October as strong shoulder alternatives. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, modest temple attire, and a flexible schedule—Candidasa rewards those who slow down.
