Bedugul

Tucked into the central highlands of Bali, about 1,200 metres above sea level, Bedugul is a calm, cool counterpoint to the island’s beach-streaked south. Spread around the volcanic Lake Bratan, this mountain region is defined by misty mornings, terraced farms, and a cluster of temples that rank among Bali’s most photographed. Where Kuta and Seminyak deliver humidity and crowds, Bedugul offers pine-scented air, sweater weather, and a slower pace that feels worlds away from the coast.

## A Highland Region Worth the Detour

Bedugul isn’t a single village but a loose collection of settlements around the lake, including the market towns of Bedugul, Baturiti, and Candikuning. The area has long served as a weekend escape for Balinese families escaping the lowland heat, and that local-favourite quality remains intact despite growing visitor numbers. Cabbage, coffee, and especially strawberries grow on the surrounding slopes, giving the region a distinctly agricultural feel. The climate sits comfortably in the high teens to mid-twenties Celsius year-round, which is part of the appeal for anyone wilting under Bali’s coastal sun.

## The Temples of the Lake

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is the headline sight, and rightly so. This 17th-century water temple appears to float on the lake, its tiered meru towers reflected in still water when conditions cooperate. Dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and rivers, it remains an active place of worship and a working irrigation temple for the region. Photographers should aim for early morning, when mist often clings to the lake surface and tour buses have yet to arrive.

Beyond the famous Beratan temple, smaller shrines line the lakeshore and nearby rice paddies. Pura Genting is worth a stop for its quiet hilltop setting, while the Bali Botanical Gardens at Candikuning offer a more terrestrial counterpoint to the lake views, with orchids, ferns, and an impressive canopy walk.

## What to Do Beyond the Temples

Most visitors breeze through in half a day, which is a mistake. The strawberry farms around Pancasari let you pick your own fruit and sample jam, chocolate, and fresh juice from roadside stalls. The lake itself supports paddle boats and small jukung boats, a relaxed way to take in the surrounding peaks. Adventure seekers can head further up the road toward Munduk for waterfall hikes, or stop at the Bali Treetop Adventure Park near the botanical gardens for zip-lining and obstacle courses set in the forest canopy. Local warungs serve food that differs from coastal Bali: think steamed corn, grilled lake fish, and strawberry-flavoured everything.

## Practical Tips Before You Go

The weather shifts quickly up here. Mornings are often clear, but fog and rain roll in by early afternoon, especially between November and March. Bring a light layer even in dry season; the elevation makes air-conditioning unnecessary indoors, and many restaurants and temples get genuinely chilly. Weekend traffic from Denpasar can turn the mountain road into a slow crawl, so early starts pay off. Drivers in the area are accustomed to day-trippers, and arranging a car with a driver for 10-12 hours from south Bali typically costs between 700,000 and 900,000 rupiah, depending on negotiation and inclusions. Entrance fees at the botanical gardens and Ulun Danu Beratan are modest by regional standards. Keep small rupiah notes handy, as many smaller farms and stalls don’t accept cards.

## Plan Your Visit

The easiest route from south Bali runs via Mengwi and Baturiti along a well-maintained mountain road, roughly two to two-and-a-half hours from Seminyak or Nusa Dua depending on traffic. Most visitors arrive by private car or driver, as public transport options are limited and scooter journeys up the winding hill road are not recommended for inexperienced riders. Allow at least a full day, ideally overnight if waterfall hikes are on the agenda, and pair Bedugul with a stop at Tanah Lot or Jatiluwih on the return route for a balanced itinerary. The dry months between April and October offer the most reliable weather for temple photography and lake activities.
