Unveiling Bali’s Rice Bowl
Tabanan Regency is Bali’s agricultural heartland, producing much of the island’s rice, coffee, cocoa, and tropical fruits. Its emerald-green rice terraces stretch from the coast to the central highlands, earning it the nickname ‘Bali’s Rice Bowl’. Tabanan is also home to the famous Jatiluwih rice terraces and the serene Ulun Danu Beratan Temple.
Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Jatiluwih’s rice terraces follow the contours of the hills for over 600 hectares. The subak irrigation system here is considered one of the best-preserved examples of traditional Balinese agriculture. Walk the marked trails, cycle through the paddies, or simply enjoy the view from one of the hillside cafes.
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple
One of Bali’s most photographed landmarks. The temple appears to float on the surface of Lake Beratan, surrounded by the mountains of Bedugul. Built in the 17th century, it is dedicated to the goddess of the lake, Dewi Danu. The temple is fully operational and worth visiting in the early morning when mist hangs over the water.
Bedugul & the Highlands
The Bedugul region in central Tabanan enjoys a cool mountain climate. The area is known for its botanical gardens, strawberry farms, and the traditional market at Candikuning where fresh produce and flowers are sold daily. The drive from the coast to Bedugul passes through some of Bali’s most scenic mountain roads.
