Ulun Danu Beratan Festival — a cultural and religious celebration held at Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, one of Bali’s most photographed and spiritually significant temples. Located on the shores of Lake Beratan in the Bedugul highlands, this iconic temple appears to float on the water when water levels are high, creating one of Bali’s most recognisable images.
The festival honours Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and water, who is believed to reside in Lake Beratan. The ceremony involves traditional Balinese Hindu rituals, odalan (temple anniversary) prayers, and performances of sacred dances and gamelan music. The cool mountain air and misty lake setting provide a dramatically different atmosphere from Bali’s coastal temples, making this a uniquely serene spiritual experience.
Visitor tips: The temple is located approximately 90 minutes from Ubud and 2 hours from Seminyak. The mountain climate is significantly cooler than the coast — temperatures can drop to 15-20°C (59-68°F). Bring a jacket or sweater. Sarong and sash are required for temple entry. The surrounding Bedugul area offers the Bali Botanical Garden, twin lakes, and strawberry farms. Weekend visits can be busy with domestic tourists — arrive early for the most peaceful experience.
