Taman Ayun Barong Festival — a three-day cultural event held at Pura Taman Ayun, one of Bali’s most important and beautiful water temples, located in Mengwi, Badung. The festival honours the Barong, the mythical lion-like creature believed to be the king of good spirits and the protector of the Balinese Hindu faith.
The centrepiece of the festival is a series of Barong dance performances depicting the eternal battle between the Barong (good) and Rangda (evil). These performances are staged within the temple’s magnificent grounds, surrounded by wide moats and multi-tiered meru shrines. The festival also features traditional gamelan orchestras, community processions, and ceremonial offerings prepared by local villagers.
Visitor tips: Pura Taman Ayun is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site within the Subak system. Sarong and sash are required for entry. The temple is approximately 30 minutes from Seminyak and 20 minutes from Ubud, making it an easy day trip. The best time to visit is mid-morning when the performances are in full swing. Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard — check local guidelines for restricted areas.
