Event Details

Makepung Lampit — a traditional buffalo race (kerapan kerbau) unique to the Jembrana regency of West Bali. This centuries-old tradition sees jockeys race pairs of decorated buffalo across muddy rice fields at astonishing speed, combining elements of sport, ritual, and community celebration.

The buffalo are adorned with colourful harnesses, bells, and traditional decorations. Each pair is guided by a jockey standing on a simple wooden sled (the lampit) behind the animals, steering them with ropes while maintaining balance through the mud and water. Races are accompanied by gamelan music, cheering crowds, and festival stalls selling local food and crafts.

Visitor tips: Makepung is held during the dry season following the rice harvest. The best viewing spots fill up early — arrive by mid-morning. Wear clothes and shoes that can handle mud, as the spectator areas are along the edges of wet rice fields. Sun protection and insect repellent are essential. The town of Negara in Jembrana is the epicentre, approximately 90 minutes west of Canggu by road.
