Kuningan

Kuningan — the final and most spiritually significant day of the Galungan festival period in Balinese Hindu tradition. On this day, ancestral spirits who have been welcomed to Earth during the preceding ten days of Galungan return to the heavens.

Balinese Hindus across the island gather at family temples (sanggah), village temples (pura), and regional temples for special prayers, offerings, and ceremonies. Households prepare elaborate offerings including tamiang (ancestral shields), endongan (provision bags for the spirits’ journey), and jejabaan (ornamental offerings made from woven coconut leaves).

Visitor tips: Kuningan is observed every 210 days according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar. Temples will be especially busy from morning until midday. Dress respectfully with sarong and sash. Photography is permitted but avoid disrupting rituals and ceremonies. Local markets sell special Kuningan offerings in the days leading up to the ceremony. The following day, locals traditionally visit beaches and rivers for cleansing rituals.
