Unveiling Bali’s Historical Heart
Klungkung may be Bali’s smallest regency, but its historical significance is immense. The Klungkung Kingdom was the most powerful of Bali’s nine kingdoms, and its royal court at Semarapura remains the island’s most important historical site. The regency also includes the beautiful offshore islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.
Kerta Gosa (Hall of Justice)
The centrepiece of Klungkung’s royal compound. The ceiling is entirely covered in traditional Kamasan-style paintings depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and punishments in the afterlife. These paintings served as moral instruction for those awaiting judgment. The adjacent floating pavilion (Bale Kambang) is equally impressive.
Nusa Penida
Bali’s wildest island destination. From Klungkung’s harbour at Padang Bai or Sanur, fast boats reach Nusa Penida in under 45 minutes. The island’s south coast features dramatic cliffs (Kelingking Beach), natural infinity pools (Angel’s Billabong), and excellent snorkeling at Crystal Bay and Manta Point.
Traditional Weaving
Klungkung is known for its traditional songket weaving — a gold-threaded textile worn during ceremonies. Visit the weaving villages around Semarapura where artisan weavers keep this centuries-old craft alive. Many workshops welcome visitors to observe and purchase directly.
